Final Piece

I decided not to create a video representing the invisibility suit idea, but instead an image. I felt that this represents best what the technology is.

The image below shows two people in the middle of New York and they are both camouflage silhouettes. I chose this idea because even though they are ot technically invisiuble, the camouflage is designed to blend into an environment, so by using this it represents the idea of being invisible.

A Scanner Darkly- Scramble Suit

had a good idea on how to represent my technology through video and image. After watching 'A Scanner Darkly' i featured a constantly changing identity suit that changes various parts of the body. I had the idea of using this style of scrambling to represent the constant changing that is possible with the projection/invisibility suit.

Final Idea/Advertisment

Right so the final concept of the 'invisiblity' suit is to create a technology which actually in theory isn't invisible to begin with but basically acts as a projector, allowing it to become camouflaged with its surroundings along with the ability to project onto it what ever the user wishes.

The clothing itself will use reflective fibers that will pick up video and images and display them back to give the impression of invisibility/camouflage......

Thinking about how the user can project onto the clothing from video etc without the having to lug around a video camera in all situations makes it unpractical. Tiny cameras could be positioned on the clothing to project onto it, but must also be reflective in order not to show up, else the idea of invisibility or camouflage would be pretty pointless!

I will create a video advert to represent the idea of the idea of the proposed technology. An image based advert may also be used in conjunction with the video idea.

Upsides to the 'Invisible' Clothing

The previous post touches on possible negatives that the clothing could cause. Although these need to be recognised the positives of this technology are equally as important.

If this technology was developed it would allow people to change the appearance of almost any part of them without the need of permanent surgery.
Being able to constantly change how you want to appear without being permanent would be the biggest upside, it would allow the user to be totally unique in the way they look and easily changeable.

Social Impact and Downsides

Ok so the idea has changed slightly as you've read from my previous post. Now I need to recognise the impact that this technology would have on society.
The main impact will be the ability to become invisible. This is going to present a number of factors:

1. Being invisible or camouflaged with anything that is projected could allow the user to do what ever they like and be virtually undetected. Posses good and bad points. i.e crime

2. Although the user knows they are invisible, others may not. This could be the cause of accidents etc

3. Easy ability to 'disappear' could pose problems due to the fact that users can virtually become non existent. Obviously not being a permanent transformation this isn't a huge concern but could effect certain people.

4. The change in personal appearance if used to enhance or project different features could allow the user to appear however they like. This could lead to the user becoming dependent on the technology for their personal appearance.

All the factors mentioned do seem to be quite negative but I thought I would point out the possible downsides to this technological idea.

Invisibility Suit/Clothing Re-think

After researching similar technologies to that of the invisible clothing idea, I decided on changing the intended purpose of the technology. Originally as posted previously it would be military and police orientated and would focus on the implications and impact this would cause within these areas along with what would happen if the clothing was to become available to the public.

I've decided that instead of military and police use, the technology should be aimed towards society as a way of changing personal appearance without being permanent.
This could be a new way of providing cosmetic surgery, minus the surgery and the long lasting effects.

The clothing was originally intended to be used for invisibility or camouflage, but instead it could be used for projecting any type of image of video onto it resulting in a number of different uses, i.e. camouflage, invisibility, image and video display.

Similar Technology

Researching my idea to see if any other similar technology exists i found an article from www.theinquirer.net. It states that Tokyo University has developed clothing made from tiny pieces of glass that act as screen which allow video recorded footage to be projected onto the clothing. The footage is the background of where the user of the clothing is positioned. Although it says the technology is far from perfected its a step towards the actual technology being produced.

"Adaptive Fabrics"

"New inter-connection technologies using conductive fabrics allow sensors and processing devices to be networked together. This technology can produce fabrics that change color. The military is also interested in this chameleon-like technology to improve camouflage techniques."
